SmartCode 916 Gives Consumers Broader Range of Electronic Lock Options;
SecureScreen Feature Protects Against "Smudge" Attacks
LAKE FOREST, CA – Kwikset, the leader in residential security, announces the availability of the SmartCode 916, a touchscreen version of the company's highly popular SmartCode™ 914 deadbolt lock. The SmartCode 916 provides all of the features of SmartCode -- including keyless entry -- combined with the added convenience and enhanced aesthetics of a capacitive touchscreen.
Users can activate the SmartCode 916 with the touch of a finger. The touchscreen is very responsive, sensing contact quickly for fast code entry. Plus, the screen will auto-detect a correct code and quickly unlock. The cool white LED display provides crisp, high-definition LED illumination.
A dedicated lock button provides the user with convenient and fast one-touch locking. The intuitive user interface makes the SmartCode 916 one of the easiest-to-use electronic locks on the market. The Home Connect™ technology incorporated into the SmartCode 916 (both Z-Wave® and Zigbee® versions) allows the lock to communicate with other wireless products in the home such as security systems and home entertainment systems, making the SmartCode 916 a "centerpiece" of today's advanced digital homes.

A unique feature of the SmartCode 916 is SecureScreen™, an important feature that can help mask "smudge" attacks, in which passcodes can potentially be jeopardized by detecting frequently used numbers from the oily residues on the touchscreen surface. When SecureScreen is activated, two random numbers will appear on screen. The user must touch these numbers to display the full screen, from which the user can then enter his/her user code. The increased usage of the touch screen surface masks the correct numbers that are used for user access codes.
The SmartCode 916, which can hold up to 30 user codes, incorporates many of the advanced features recently introduced into the SmartCode 914, including:
- Dramatically reduced interior size for increased aesthetic appeal
- All-metal, tamper-resistant interior escutcheon
- BHMA Grade 2 Certification, ensuring top quality and durability
- UL Certification with 20-minute fire rating
- A Mastercode option allowing users to prevent user codes from being added to or deleted from the lock
Other features include: Kwikset’s patented SmartKey® re-key technology, that allows homeowners to re-key their locks in seconds without having to remove the lock from the door; BumpGuard™ technology that protects homeowners from lock bumping; the ease of one-touch programming; the ability to integrate with the widest variety of wireless security and home automation platforms in the industry.
"The new SmartCode 916 provides consumers with additional ways to experience the benefits of our SmartCode product line," said Keith Brandon, director of Residential Access Solutions for Kwikset. "Each new lock that we introduce brings an increased level of convenience, innovation, and safety to the residential security market. The SmartCode 916 does that as well, particularly through our unique SecureScreen feature."
